Ms. Antonia Hume
Ms. Hume has a simple philosophy about her teaching, “Allow students to harness their own interests, encourage questions for clarification, guide them with your own passion for learning, integrity, and humor. Furthermore, provide students with a safe and engaging learning environment while helping them to become and remain motivated students who develop into independent life long learners.”
Ms. Hume grew up in the Tri-Valley in a ranching family, and is the first woman in her Mexican American extended family to attain a higher education. In addition to embracing a love for the land and valuing her own educational experience, she always knew teaching would be in her future. As a second generation Californian, she values her rich multicultural background, and began her undergraduate studies at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, completing her undergraduate degree in Behavioral Science and then at the University de Namur with a graduate degree in Public Administration. While raising her family, she went on to attain a Secondary Education credential both in English and Social Science at St. Mary’s College.
Ms. Hume has over 20 years of teaching experience. She began her career at the University de Namur as an instructor with the Career Center. Her love for English and History filtered into her lectures while preparing her college students for the real world of work through internships, career life planning, and job search strategies. After raising two daughters in Pleasanton, she returned to the classroom full time as a secondary educator with the Pleasanton Unified School District teaching English and History in all three Middle Schools, 9th and 10th grade English at Amador Valley High School, and presently teaches ESL with Pleasanton Adult and Career Education. Her passion for guiding students through Language Development & Acquisition, or World History & US History is interlaced with the literature that was inspired by the history she teaches in the classroom. Moreover, she requires that her students ask the tough questions in order to develop their abilities to think critically about the world they live in. Most importantly, her primary goal as an educator is to have students learn how to effectively communicate both written and verbally to convey their opinions with sound evidence and logical reasoning.
Lastly, Ms. Hume’s love of history finds her traveling to Europe and throughout the U.S., seeking adventures at each one of her destinations. As an educator, to make a difference, she is always mindful of how brief her time is with a student in the classroom, and works to always be in the present when working with her students. She brings her passion for learning and her desire to develop successful human beings to Mill Creek Academy.
